Students Selected from Instrumental Concerto Competition

Bethlehem, Pa., June 8, 2010—Moravian College students Jessica Mitchell ’11, Bath, Pa. and Caitlin Worrich ’12, Bethlehem, Pa. were recently named winners of the Instrumental Concerto Competition. This competition decides which students will perform solos with the Moravian College Community Orchestra and Moravian College Wind Ensemble in the next academic year. Mitchell, cello, will perform Bruch's Kol Nidrei Sunday, November 21, 2010 with the MCCO and Worrich, trombone, will perform Pryor's Thoughts of Love Friday, February 25, 2011 with the MCWE.

The Instrumental Concerto Competition was introduced in 2007. Competitors must be rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors enrolled at Moravian as instrumental music majors during the audition and performance semesters. It consists of a memorized concerto movement or piece to be performed with the respective ensemble. The directors of the ensembles, Donald Spieth and James Barnes, serve as judges to select one (or no) winner for each ensemble. Past winners performing with the MCCO include guitarist James Schultheis, class of 2010; pianist Christopher Wyatt, class of 2010; and flautist Justin Holguin, class of 2011. Past winners performing with the MCWE include saxophonist Kyle Hummel, class of 2008; clarinetist Helen Smith, class of 2009; and marimbist Cynthia Dretel, class of 2010.
