Moravian Students visit Sovereign Bank as “CEOs for the Day”

Bethlehem, Pa., April 6, 2006—Two business majors from Moravian College recently served as "CEOs for the Day" at Sovereign Bank. The students were selected during the college's annual Careers in Banking Networking Event that occured during February. To experience the roles of CEOs, the students were afforded the opportunity to observe first-hand the operations and administration that occur in the world of banking.

Moravian College juniors Calvin Jones ’07, Philadelphia, Pa., and Josh Moyer ’07, Bethlehem, Pa., were joined by Daria Aparovitch, a senior finance major from Kutztown University as student CEOs.

The students and Warren Hilton, associate dean of student development at Moravian College, met with Sovereign Bank executives Laura Azzalina, regional president for the Lehigh Valley, and Melissa Giedl, human resources recruitment representative for the Lehigh Valley, in front of Moravian’s Haupert Union Building to begin their adventure. The group traveled by limousine to the bank’s headquarters, Sovereign Plaza, located in Reading, Pa. they were greeted by Phyllis Caruso, senior team member and services representative, for refreshments in the conference room. Throughout the morning, the students met with Caruso; Jane Madio, human resources senior business director; Cheryl Patnick, director of Sovereign Bank’s Team Member Services; Chris Pembroke, director of 601 The Sovereign Ad Agency; Carl Brown, assistant vice president and public relations manager; and Joe Schupp, assistant vice president, community development officer, and foundation administrator.

After a luncheon break the students were given a personal tour of the Sovereign Plaza by Jennifer Eisenhar, administrative assistant in client relations. They also met with Dick Esht, senior vice president and director of corporate communications; Larry Delp, executive vice president and managing director for central and northern Pennsylvania; Pam Campbell, and Joshua Dodd ‘99, relationship manager II and vice president of the Lehigh Valley Business Banking Group. At the conclusion of the day, students were transported back to Moravian College by limousine.

Moravian College has hosted a “Careers in Banking” networking event since 2004 in an effort to connect talented students with the banking industry. Sovereign Bank has been a participant in the event for the past two years to afford students a behind-the-scenes view of the banking industry through the “CEO for a Day” program.
