Moravian’s “Relay for Life” Raises $10,000 for American Cancer Society

Bethlehem, Pa., April 7, 2006—Moravian College recently raised more than $10,000 running a Relay for Life event to benefit the American Cancer Society. More than 200 students participated during Tuesday’s “Day of Service” in activities to raise money and to support cancer research.

The relay was held from noon until midnight on Moravian's campus. Students were organized into teams, with each team responsible to have at least one member on the track at all times. Several teams also included faculty members. Money was raised by registration fees; pledge solicitations from sponsors for team participants who clocked time or distance on the track; a Chinese auction; and individual donations.

The day was full of solemn and entertaining moments. Events of the day were both solemn and meaningful. A special ceremony to honor cancer survivors was celebrated before the first lap of the relay started . Luminaries were lit at the end of the relay in commemoration of loved ones who did not survive. Luminaries were lit in memory of loved ones lost to the disease.

Several sporting tournaments raised funds, and games and activities were set-up for the children on Moravian's field. DJ “Special Frank” and a trio of local bands provided music for participants throughout the Relay for Life event.

The hard work and dedication of the student planning committee, advised by Dr. Cecelia Fox of the Moravian College biology department spearheaded the day's success. Plans for next year’s relay are already underway.
