Pushing Boundaries

Marissa Sharon ’07 knows no boundaries – geographic or any other kind. There was a moment in her painting class at Moravian when, unbeknownst to her at the time, her life changed.

Rudy Ackerman, emeritus professor of art, came to discuss his upcoming trip to Italy. Three weeks later, Sharon was eating pizza in Venice. Shortly after graduating with a degree in studio art, she returned to Italy—this time to study the art of pastry at Apicius International School of Hospitality in Florence and intern with renowned cioccolatiere Andrea Bianchini at La Bottega del Cioccolato in that beautiful city.

“I remembered how easy it is to pick up and do something huge,” recalls Sharon. “I remembered being in Italy with Dr. Ackerman and feeling like anything was possible. I fell in love with the aesthetic beauty of Italy, wandering through new, foreign places, and being part of a global community. So, I picked up my life and did it again!”

Until recently, Sharon was a pastry cook for Scarpetta at The Montage Beverly Hills in L.A. She now is an artisan pasta maker there. She calls her current position “too good to pass up,” and looks forward to learning and growing as a chef in this highly specialized field. Sharon is living a dream, combining her artistic nature with her passion for the specialized, precise elements of pastry. Sharon says she was born an artist but comes from a food family – her dad was a chef in the Navy and her mom worked in a fine dining restaurant. Now, she has the best of both worlds.

“A lot of students go to college thinking they’re going to pick a major, get a degree, and get a job,” she says. “With the ever-changing world we’re living in, people’s paths aren’t as simple as they used to be. I’m a perfect example of that. When someone suggested I come to L.A., I couldn’t think of a reason not to. I bought a one-way ticket, packed my bags, and moved here. It hadn’t always been my dream to be here; another move just felt really organic and natural at that point in my life. Moravian really prepared me for the challenges I’ve faced in trying to find an exciting, satisfying life.”
