Bethlehem, Pa., January 10, 2011--Dr. Monica Law, a faculty member of Moravian College's M.B.A. and Master of Science in Human Resource Management programs, recently received the Best Paper Award from the 2010 International Business and Economics Research Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Law's paper was entitled "An Empirical Investigation into the Administrative Procedures Taken in Response to the Detection of Medical Errors Within Acute Care Hospitals in Pennsylvania."
Dr. Law investigated the steps taken by healthcare administrators within Pennsylvania acute care hospitals with respect to the detection of medical errors in order to provide corrective measures. Previous research indicated that the majority of medical errors occur due to system breakdowns, such as lack of supervision, lack of organizational planning, ill-conceived reward systems that reinforce the wrong behaviors or results, or other such problems that stem from the work environment. Law found that administrators addressed errors not with systemic reviews and corrections but with training and re-education efforts that may not be effective in remedying errors. Law recommended that healthcare administrators conduct assessments to determine the root causes of medical errors then address the management practices that lead to medical errors.
