Bethlehem, Pa., July 5, 2011--The Moravian College Music Institute will hold a Summer Youth Jazz Camp from July 11-15. The weeklong camp will include jam sessions, jazz history, master classes, workshops, classes in recording techniques, and a recording session with a beginner/intermediate track and an advanced track available. The activities will culminate with a Camper's Concert at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 15, in Foy Hall. The concert is open to the public and admission is free. The camp is designed for both young musicians entering grades 8-12 who play jazz and those who have interest, but little or no jazz playing experience.
The goals of the camp are to instruct students in the performance practices of the jazz art form, to familiarize students with the music theory and historical elements relevant to jazz performance, and to enhance the students' jazz performance capabilities. Faculty for the sessions include Tony Gairo for saxophone, Alan Gaumer for trumpet, Lou Lanza for vocals, Gary Rissmiller for drums, Paul Rostock for double bass, and Dave Roth for piano. Dr. Neil Wetzel, Moravian's director of jazz studies, serves as camp director. The MCMI is also accepting applications for private music lessons for Summer 2011. Music lessons are available on all instruments for student of all ages and levels. All lessons take place in the Moravian College Music Department in Bethlehem's Historic District at Church and Main Streets.
