Moravian College Announces New Master of Health Administration (MHA) Degree
New Graduate Degree Program Meets Needs of Healthcare Organizations for Advanced Skills in Management
Bethlehem, Pa., May 22, 2013—Moravian College announced it has begun offering a master’s degree program in health administration. The Master of Health Administration (M.H.A.) is the only master’s degree offered by a college or university in the Lehigh Valley focusing exclusively on developing the knowledge and skills of current and future managers in the healthcare industry.
The program is designed for healthcare administrators working in hospital systems, hospital units, skilled care facilities, physicians’ offices, as well as government, insurance, medical device, and insurance companies and those looking to enter the industry. The American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) calls healthcare one of today’s most dynamic and growing fields with a range of opportunities and challenges. ACHE reports that many of the positions in healthcare that previously required only a bachelor’s degree now require a master’s degree (http://www.ache.org/carsvcs/ycareer.cfm).
The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the growth in positions in healthcare management will be significantly greater than for all occupations. The Bureau also states that a master’s degree in health administration may be necessary for those already in healthcare to advance in the healthcare field.
“We reviewed our current graduate degree offerings and did a lot of research to see if an M.H.A. would make sense for us.” said Dr. William Kleintop, associate dean of business and management programs. “We looked at the growth in healthcare and the challenges that industry is facing and decided that with our experience in serving those in healthcare we could offer a master’s degree program equal in quality to our M.B.A. and Master of Science in Nursing programs to meet their particular needs.”
The M.H.A. program is a partnership between the Moravian MBA and the Master of Science Program in Nursing. “We were able to take the expertise in healthcare administration in our Master of Science program in nursing and in our healthcare concentration and leadership development core of the MBA program to create an exciting new M.H.A. program,” said Kleintop.
According to Dr. Lori Hoffman, director of the Master of Science program in nursing, “developing health care workers, including nurses, with management and leadership skills is essential to the transformation of health care systems for our future.” The M.H.A. program is an interdisciplinary program that places business, health administration, and nursing students in classes together where they can discuss problems and solutions in multiple perspectives. The M.H.A. offers an excellent opportunity for those in positions of influence in health care settings to experience interdisciplinary, collaborative education,” said Hoffman.
The Moravian M.H.A. degree develops students’ leadership and management skills with a special focus on health administration. Students complete 12 graduate courses to earn the degree. Experienced faculty from the Moravian MBA and Master of Science program in nursing lead the M.H.A. classes. Classes are offered in the evening, Monday through Thursday, and Saturday mornings.
