Bethlehem, Pa., December 2, 2013—For the 15th consecutive year, Moravian College will host a holiday luncheon for underprivileged residents of Bethlehem who might otherwise not be able to enjoy a seasonal meal. On Saturday, December 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Moravian volunteers will provide a festive meal and fun activities for participants at the Community Holiday Feast at the Church of the Nativity, located on Bethlehem's south side. The annual event provides a hot meal and small gifts for local families in need, in collaboration with local community service organizations. This year, for the third year time, the Moravian College Center for Leadership and Service and student leaders are organizing the holiday luncheon.
"The annual Community Feast provides a hot holiday meal to members of the Bethlehem community. Moravian reaches out to local organizations (non-profits and churches) that support the families and individuals that are experiencing hunger, homelessness, or other difficult circumstances to this meal each December" says Katie Dantsin, director of this event as well as the Center for Leadership and Service. "Guests of Moravian College and the Cathedral of the Nativity Church, where the event is held, are welcomed with warm smiles, a hearty holiday meal, music performed by Moravian students, the holiday hound (Moravian College mascot), and activities for children."
Kayla Poole ’13 will be the student coordinator for this event and will team up with Katie Dantsin to make this Community Feast a memorable time for the families. Dantsin is gathering volunteers, including faculty and staff, to help with crafts, serving meals, and other tasks. Hopefully this number reaches around 40-50 volunteers as it has in the past. For each of the last 14 years, a plethora of Moravian College faculty, staff, and students have volunteered to help serve a traditional holiday dinner of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, carrots, cake, and pie. Moravian College continues its partnership with social services agencies to provide outreach to residents of Bethlehem that would benefit from some holiday spirit and a nutritious hot meal. Cathedral Church is providing the site and Moravian College is providing the food and volunteers for the lunch. Moravian College volunteers will be setting up, serving food, greeting, entertaining, and interacting with guests and their children.
Tickets to the holiday luncheon are distributed to needy families in the community by New Bethany Ministries, Victory House, Trinity Episcopal Church, Fountain Hill School Family Center, Fowler Family Center, Turning Point, and Clearview Elementary School Family Center. The Cathedral Church of the Nativity is located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, at Wyandotte Street/Route 378 on south end of Hill-to-Hill Bridge in Sayre Hall.
