25 high schools to compete at 7th annual debate - April 26
(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) – Moravian College will play host the 7th annual Spartan Invitational on Saturday, April 26. Over 200 students representing 25 high schools from Pennsylvania and New Jersey will participate in the speech and debate competition, organized by Southern Lehigh High School in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.
The wide-range of debate categories will include original oratory, extemporaneous speaking, declamation, dramatic interpretation, oral interpretation, dramatic due, cross-ex debate, Lincoln-Douglas debate, and student congress. CFL rules will be applied to all events and the NCFL National Tournament Resolution rules for Lincoln-Douglas debate.
Finals will be held in all categories. All competitors advancing beyond preliminary rounds will be recognized at an award ceremony at the end of the competition. Sweepstakes awards will also be presented, as well as the “Spartan Award,” which recognized excellence over the years at the tournament. Last year, Scranton H.S was the recipient of the award.
The tournament will begin at 8:45 a.m. with an opening assembly in Prosser Auditorium followed by an agenda setting session for the student congress. At 9:15 a.m., the first of 3 rounds will begin as the students spread out across 40 class on Moravian’s Main Street campus. Events will be held in Comenius Hall, Collier Hall of Science, Memorial Hall, Zinzendorf Hall, Reeves Library, and the Hurd Academic Complex. The day’s events will conclude with the finals for speech at 4:45 p.m. followed by the awards ceremony at 6:45 p.m. in Prosser Auditorium, located in the Haupert Union Building.
