(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) – Moravian College junior Kelly Haymaker (Hellertown, Pa) recently had her essay entitled "Learning to Fly" published in College Bound Magazine. The essay describes Haymaker’s transition from high school to college and was written last fall for her Creative Nonfiction Writing class. As part of the course, students were required to submit an essay for publication to a magazine of their choice. “Learning to Fly” was the last essay Haymaker wrote for the class, and she decided to submit it to College Bound Magazine.
Haymaker was notified in January that her essay would be printed. “I completely forgot about sending my essay to College Bound Magazine,” said Haymaker. “When I got an envelope from the magazine in the mail, I almost threw it away, assuming it wasn’t important.” But Haymaker felt compelled to keep the envelope. “When I read the letter, I was just amazed. I couldn’t believe that my essay was accepted. I never really thought of myself as a really good writer,” Haymaker admitted.
Haymaker has always had a passion for writing. “I have always loved to write, but I never really had much time for it growing up,” said Haymaker. “When I reached high school, I took a creative writing class. My teacher was very persistent in helping me realize my potential. She always thought I had talent.” Haymaker credits her grandmother, parents, and Maya Angelou for inspiring her to write. “I don’t look up to most people, but these people have had a great impact on my life,” Haymaker said. Haymaker is now studying English at Moravian College, with plans to become an English teacher.
