Moving Beyond Borders: Cross Cultural Exchanges

This program provides students, faculty, and staff with the opportunity to explore and expand their knowledge about different cultures and communities, to learn about their history, and experience getting to know their “neighbors”.

Each semester trips are coordinated to various communities in the tri-state area. Travel has included a walking tour of Harlem and the immigrant communities of the lower eastside in New York, Ellis Island, Lackawanna Coal Mine and Eckley Village, Ironbound Section in Newark, New Jersey and the Amish and Mennonite communities in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Dinner and Dialogue

We explore and experience different ethnic eateries in the Lehigh Valley and learn about their culture, traditions, and history. It is our intent to help the Moravian community learn about its neighbors in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding communities.

Workshops

Throughout the year workshops are offered that focus on cultural awareness and social justice education. In these sessions we explore identity development, prejudice, stereotypes, the “isms”, and strategies to improve one’s understanding of the “other” as well as one’s own blind spots.

Our goal is simple: to engage individuals in meaningful dialogues that enhance their understanding and awareness!

In collaboration with the Office of Human Resources workshops are held for faculty and staff on cultural awareness, inclusion, and diversity related issues.
