Biography

JOHN D. ROSSI, III, MBA, CPA, CMA, CFM, CFP® is a seasoned and proven accountant, financial planner, business leader and lecturer with twenty-five plus years of business and academic experience.  Mr. Rossi has led a career that included several regional CPA firms and extensive teaching. John founded the CPA firm of Rossi & Co in Allentown, PA and later merged his firm with Ellwood & Company, PC. Today, John is an Associate Professor of Accounting at Moravian University in Bethlehem, PA. He teaches a variety of classes ranging from Financial Accounting to Advanced Accounting.  In addition he advises the Accounting Club (IMA Student Chapter) and is a past president of the Lehigh Valley IMA.  Mr. Rossi is also President of JR3 Management Services, PC specializing in financial reporting, taxation and consulting services.

John is the author of several articles related to his research interest in the area of financial reporting, taxation and personal finance.  John has been quoted extensively in newspapers and magazines on issues related to his expertise. In addition, he is a frequent presenter on technical and management issues at workshops and Continuing Professional Education Seminars.

John holds an MBA from Moravian University, and a B.S. degree in Accounting & Finance from La Salle University. He holds the following professional certifications: CPA (Certified Public Accountant); CMA (Certified Management Accountant); CFM (Certified in Financial Management); and CFP® (Certified Financial Planner).

  • John D. Rossi, III (Associate Professor of Accounting) published an article in the assisted living and retirement planning edition of the Lehigh Valley Business Journal, dated May 29, 2017, entitled "Continuing Care Communities Ensure Lifelong Home" His article focuses on the benefits of CCRC's and the benefits of considering them for retirement.

  • John D. Rossi, III (Associate Professor of Accounting) published an article in the employee benefits and insurance edition of the Lehigh Valley Business Journal, dated May 23, 2016, entitled "Old Law's Rebirth another reason for long-term care insurance"  His article is a warning to practitioners that the old filial laws may get resurrected and we are beginning to see cases where the courts are affirming them.

2015

  • John D. Rossi III (Associate Professor of Accounting) published an article in the education edition of the Lehigh Valley Business Journal, dated March 21, 2015, entitled "529 Plans are ripe for the saving -- yet few pick them." His article focuses on the benefits of using 529 plans to save for college and their suitability. 
  • John D Rossi III (Associate Professor of Accounting) published an article in the November 23, 2015 issue of the Lehigh Valley Business Journal entitled "New standard results in major changes in accounting". The article alerts accountants to new standards in nonaudit engagements that will be mandatory next year and represents the most significant changes to the SSARS since the issuance of SSARS #1.
  • John D Rossi III (Associate Professor of Accounting) published an article in the October 19th 2015 issue of the Pennsylvania Business Journal entitled "Reimbursement for premiums may lead to excise taxes" which alerts employers to a little known provision in the Affordable Care Act that could be very expensive - possibly bankruptcy - if employers at risk do not take immediate action.
  • John D Rossi III (Associate Professor of Accounting) served on a panel of experts to explain the impact of SSARS #21 (Statement on Standards for Accounting and Review Services pronouncement number 21) and its impact on practitioners. This video (see below) will be among several resources on the PICPA (Pennsylvania Institute of CPAs) website to aid practitioners in understanding how SSARS #21 will impact them and comply with the new standard by December 15th, 2015
  • John D Rossi III (Associate Professor of Accounting) attended the annual meeting of the American Accounting Association (AAA) on August 8 to 12, 2015 in Chicago, ILL. At the meeting professor Rossi presented a paper on "Teaching Professional Skepticism" and volunteered as a Discussant for a paper titled "Satisfaction and Learning Outcomes with Distance Education in Brazil among students of Accounting: Is the grass always greener on the other side?". In addition Professor Rossi served on the following committees "IMA Academic Mentor" and the "Teaching and Learning Committee of the International Section".
  • John D Rossi III (Associate Professor of Accounting) was appointed to the "SMALL BUSINESS FINANCIAL AND REGULATORY AFFAIRS COMMITTEE" of the IMA (institute of Management Accountants) under a two year term beginning the 2015 fiscal year. The committee is charged with keeping IMA members informed with developments and pronouncements of regulatory organizations that impact small business.
  • John D Rossi III (Associate Professor of Accounting) was asked to be included in the "Constituent Database" of the GASB (Governmental Accounting Standards Board). In this role my input will help the GASB teams with the projects they are working on, and also, being a part of their database also can keep me updated on all things that are going on at the GASB, which are extensive.
  • John D Rossi III (Associate Professor of Accounting) published an article in the July 13th, 2015 issue of the Lehigh Valley Business Journal entitled "Understanding the Acronyms and Products in Life Insurance". The focus of the article is to help readers understand the various types of life insurance products and the related acronyms and the advantages and disadvantages of each choice.
  • John D. Rossi III (Associate Professor of Accounting) led a round-table luncheon discussion on SSARS #21 at the IMA Annual Conference & Expo in Los Angeles, CA. on Monday June 22nd. 2015.
  • John D Rossi III (Associate Professor of Accounting) as part of his Senior Seminar in Accounting class organized and coached teams of students who responded to a case published in Strategic Finance Magazine. The students had to engage in extensive applied research and submitting a presentation. All case analysis submissions went through a preliminary evaluation. Two of the teams from Moravian University made it into the final four, which earned them travel money, a free pass for attending the IMA Conference & Exposition in Los Angeles, CA, and the right to compete for first place. Judges at the IMA Annual Conference & Exposition were selected from industry and academia. The teams from Moravian University were (Team #1) Spencer Bahel-Mowrer, Thomas Hudak, Parker Munson, Alexandra Irwin and Margaret DiMarco (Not pictured and unable to travel with the team). (Team #2) Maegan Davidson, Joe Nehme, Peter Piperata, Steven Paradiso and Jacquelyn Gordon (Not pictured and unable to travel with the team). Judges used multiple criteria in evaluating the presentations, including the technical content, presentation skills, case analysis style, presentation organization, and strength of recommendations and conclusions based on case requirements
  • While at the IMA Annual Conference & Exposition Professor John D Rossi III was recognized for his outstanding service to the IMA for his leadership role in serving on committees, having been a member for over thirty years and his work in promoting the organization.
  • John D Rossi III (Associate Professor of Accounting) attended the Mid-Atlantic regional meeting of the American Accounting Association (AAA) on April 23-25, 2015 in Cherry Hill NJ at that meeting he presented a paper entitled "Teaching Professional Skepticism" served on a panel entitled "How do Students Move Successfully Toward the Profession?" and served as a discussant for a paper entitled " What Do We Mean by Accounting Program Quality? A Decomposition of Accounting Faculty Opinions."
  • John D Rossi III (Associate Professor of Accounting) published an article in the Lehigh Valley Business Journal entitled "Uneasy, yet necessary, talk about long-term care insurance" in the April 13, 2015 issue.
  • John D. Rossi III, (Associate Professor of Accounting) published an article in the Accounting & Assurance column in the spring 2015 issue of Pennsylvania CPA Journal entitled "Reporting Discontinued Operations.” In his latest work, he clarifies a new standard on discontinued operations for a company and believes companies “...should carefully consider the circumstances and effects this new standard will have on disposal transactions and their accounting and reporting functions and financial statements going forward.”

2014

  • John D Rossi III (Associate Professor of Accounting) published an article entitled "Ambush! State is rejecting employee business expenses" in the December 8th 2014 issue of the Lehigh Valley Business Journal.

2010

  • John D. Rossi, associate professor of accounting, has been selected as one of two recipients of the 2010 Ursel K. Albers Mentor of the Year Award. The award is given by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the IMA overall and to IMA student members in particular. Professor Rossi will be recognized at the IMA Student and Educator Awards Luncheon to be held Sunday, June 6 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel as part of the IMA Annual Conference and Exposition.
  • John D. Rossi, associate professor of accounting, was recently elected to serve as a governor of the Stuart Cameron McLeod Society (SCMS)—a leadership group within Global Institute of Management Accountants. 2009

  • On June 18, 2009, John D. Rossi, associate professor of accounting, served on an expert discussion panel for the symposium "Bridging the GAAP[generally accepted accounting principles] to IFRS [international financial reporting standards]." The symposium, held at the Penn State Great Valley Conference Center, was sponsored by Relevante, a global leader in accounting and technology consulting.
  • At the 2009 annual meeting of the American Accounting Association, John D. Rossi presented a paper, "Fair Value—Is It Fair?" The meeting was held August 1-5 in New York City.
  • John D. Rossi, associate professor of accounting, was selected as a candidate for the Mark Chain/Federation of Schools of Accountancy(FSA) Innovation in Graduate Teaching Award. The award recognizes successful innovative practices in the teaching of graduate accounting courses and builds awareness of those practices among accounting academics. An AICPA Task Force, with participation from the FSA, selected the award candidates from accepted submissions to the Effective Learning Strategies Forums at the AAA annual meeting.
  • In the Summer I issue of SUM NEWS, John D. Rossi, III, associate professor of accounting, published a feature article, "Weighing Your Financials—a Look at the Impact of Fair Value."
  • John Rossi, assistant professor of accounting, was interviewed by WFMZ-TV Channel 69 News for a segment on rising credit card interest rates. The piece aired March 3, 2009. John also was quoted in an article on the same topic in the Eastern Pennsylvania Business Journal, March 9, 2009.
