1950s:
“Rocco recognized that we had a good season the year before and that success
carried over to 1956. He knew his football from his days at Cornell. He realized
we were an older, mature group and had a great open relationship with him. There
was a great deal of respect between the players and Rocco as the head coach. He had
a great way of working with people and was the type of coach you wanted to win for.
He was a great ambassador for the game and the school.”
- Champ Storch ’56
“Having not played football in high school, Rocco taught me everything about
the game and showed great patience in the learning process.”
- George Hollendersky ’59
1970s:
“Coach Rocco Calvo established high expectations for all student athletes.
As a player I never wanted to let him down. In my 30 years as an educator I continue
to use Coach Calvo as a guide in my professional, personal and spiritual life. Today
and always, ‘it is a great day to be a Hound.’”
- Robert Gratz ’75
“The successes I have enjoyed in business are directly related to the rigorous
demands and unfailing standards of excellence taught by Coach Calvo”.
- Keith Lambie ’73
“Rocco got us to play as a team and to believe in ourselves. He took pride
in the reputation that Moravian's Football Team was always ‘Hard Hitting.’ He
never put anybody down and always had a positive thing to say. You couldn't help
but like this guy and you wanted to win for him. Above all, he made my football experience
fun.”
- Bob Ternosky ’78
“Rocco was a gentleman. He emphasized positives-not negatives. He didn't yell
at his players and he never humiliated or dressed down a player in front of the team.
He made everyone feel like they were as important a part of the team as the next
guy. As a result, you wanted to do your best for him. His positive approach to life
was infectious.”
- Dan Nigito ’78
“The ‘Rock’ was Moravian to me...excellence in all that you do;
whatever you do; every time you do it! Coach Calvo was in equal parts educator, coach
and mentor in the difficult balancing act of athletics, scholastics and personal
growth. I feel that I have become the man I am today, in great part, from his expectation
of my personal best, acceptance of the shortfalls, and exhilaration in the better
of tomorrow.”
- Ken Rampolla ’79
1980s:
“Rocco Calvo was without a doubt the most motivational coach I had ever had.
He was a coach and a mentor, the perfect balance. He inspired many of us to play
to the top of our abilities. He was loved by his players. When you made a mistake,
Rocco didn't have to say too much, you knew what he wanted. He was patient, intelligent,
motivational and caring. He was a "real" person, someone we could look
up to. He had real feelings and deep emotions for his players and students. He gave
his heart and soul to Moravian football and was proud to be called a "Hound"!
He was and will always be “the Big Dog” of Moravian Athletics!!!”
- Ron Miksiewicz ’84
“Rocco Calvo was a great man and a great football coach. He understood that
Greyhound Football was very important to the Student-Athlete, but also understood
that football was just a learning process in a young man’s life. He was a great
personal influence on me at a time in my life when I needed it. I am sure he is in ‘Hound
Heaven!’”
