I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends

February 26, 2008

“There are only two ways to live your life.  One is as though nothing is a miracle.  The other is as though everything is a miracle.”  -Albert Einstein

This past week has been kind of crazy.  I’ve been sick with a stomach virus (no fun) that started a week ago, went away for two days, and then came back full steam this past Sunday night.  A large amount of the campus has the flu or some other sort of virus, so I am lucky that it is not any worse than it is (although I am plenty miserable).  My friends have been taking very good care of me, bringing me crackers and tea and checking up on me.  Even though being sick is a terrible experience, it’s wonderful to have such good friends who are there for me.

For the two days that I wasn’t sick, I was able to do quite a few fun things!  Many of the girls on my floor and I, and many more people who live in our dorm, went outside Wednesday night for the lunar eclipse.  It was really amazing to watch.  The next lunar eclipse will be fifteen years from now.  We all talked about how different our lives will be fifteen years from now and it was strange to think about!

Another fun experience of the past week was ice skating for the first time.  Although I have been dancing since I was four, I had never been ice skating before until this past Friday when several of my friends took me to the ice rink in Bethlehem about ten minutes away from the campus.  I’m proud to say that I only fell twice, although I didn’t do anything very risky.  By the end of the day I had learned how to successfully skate around the rink and how to turn around.  It was so much fun, and I am glad that I can finally say I’ve been ice skating.  I hope to go again before the winter is over!

I have some really great news that I am proud to report.  My sorority, ASA, raised $1,000 this past weekend for Turning Point, a local organization that helps victims of domestic abuse, and the women victims of Hurricane Katrina.  We raised the money through our performance of The Vagina Monologues, a play that raises awareness about women’s rights and violence against women while also throwing in some humor.  I got to play a little girl in the show, which was a lot of fun.  I put my hair in pig tails with pink bows and carried a teddy bear.  The show was very entertaining, and the cast was made up of ASA sisters, professors and staff, and other Moravian students.  It was a lot of fun, and I am very proud of all the money that we raised for such a worthy cause.

More exciting news from ASA- we got a new sister!  My good friend and across the hall floor mate, Beka, recently joined ASA, and we couldn’t be happier to have her.  I’m excited because there are now four girls on my floor who are also in ASA (including myself).  All eight new girls are going to find out who their Big Sisters are this Thursday night.  Getting your Big Sister is one of the most exciting parts of being in a sorority, and although I’m not getting a Little until next semester, I have been helping all of the Bigs leave clues and presents for their Littles.  I’m very excited for Thursday!

It’s hard to believe that Spring Break starts this Friday!  I am extremely excited to see my family and friends and to have an entire week without classes.  Hopefully I will be feeling more like myself by then, too.  It will be great to be home, but I know I will miss my friends and life at Moravian terribly, even if it is just a week.  What else can I say but good ol’ MoCo!
