Alumni Connection Spotlight: Vanessa Schukis '82 Sings at Fenway Park
"It's exhilarating, especially when you begin to hear the cheers as you hold the high note on the word 'free,' followed by the applause at the end for a job well done," she said. "This is one of the most fantastic feelings I have ever encountered in my performing career." Schukis has performed the national anthem on the U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides), at the New England Dragway, and at Lebanon Valley Speedway in Massachusetts. "There is no greater honor than singing the national anthem, whatever the venue," she said. Besides being a performer, Schukis is an award-winning teacher with more than 30 years of experience in performing arts education, focusing on students with learning disabilities and special needs. She teaches music at the Murphy School and Lee Academy Pilot School in Dorchester, Mass., through the outreach program of the Community Music Center of Boston. She is a member of the guest faculty at New England Conservatory in Boston and a visiting faculty member at Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Mass. For more information, see www.vanessaschukis.com.
