Presentations and Conferences

At the recent conference of the Pennsylvania Art Education Association (PAEA) in Pittsburgh, Kristin Baxter, assistant professor of art, was nominated to the PAEA executive board. She will be the co-representative for Region 10, which includes counties in the Lehigh Valley region.

Professor Baxter also presented two papers at the conference: "Bounce: Living at the intersections of art education pedagogy, art practice, and daily life" and "Authentic Art Education in the Elementary Classroom."

Christie Gilson, assistant professor of education, co-presented the session "Teaching More Effectively With Fewer Resources: Universal Design" with Camie Modjadidi, education field services coordinator, at the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators39th annual teacher education assembly, held in Hershey on October 2, 2010 Gilson presented a second workshop as well called, "Faculty Obligations Under the Americans With Disabilities Act: Reasonable Accommodations Explained."

Diane W. Husic, chair and professor Department of Biological Sciences and Audubon TogetherGreen Fellow, recently attended the annual fall Academic Renewal Conference on Creativity, Inquiry, and Discovery: Undergraduate Research In and Across the Disciplines in Durham, NC (November 11-13). She was a co-panelist on a presentation entitled "Transformative Research: Working with Undergraduates to Chart New Research Paradigms," along with Moses Lee, dean of arts and sciences at Hope College, and Silvia Ronco, program officer for Research Corporation for Scientific Advancement.

Diane W. Husic served as the project coordinator and facilitator for the 6th annual NCAA Division II Faculty Athletics Representatives (FAR Fellows) Leadership Institute, held October 29 – 31 in Indianapolis.

Grace Ji-Sun Kim, associate professor of doctrinal theology at Moravian Theological Seminary, presented two papers, presided over two sessions, and participated as a mentor at the women's mentoring luncheon at the American Academy of Religion annual meeting held in Atlanta, Oct. 28-31. The paper panels were titled "A Global Theology Embraces the Other" and "Multiculturalism, Race, and Politics."

Jason Radine, assistant professor of religion, presented a paper, "The Role of the former Northern Kingdom of Israel in the Book of the Four," at the Society of Biblical Literature Annual Meeting, held November 23 in Atlanta.

In October Nicole Tabor, assistant professor of English, gave a paper entitled "Women as Post Colonial Consumers in Irish and Native American Fiction" at the conference A River Runs Through Us: Exploring the Poetics of Place, sponsored by EAPSU, held at Lock Haven University.

Other News

Faramarz Farbod, adjunct for political science, was the speaker for "Update on Israeli-Palestinian Conflict," given at the Berks Peace Community Potluck Dinner, November 11 in Reading, Pa. Farbod also spoke on  "Socialist Libertarianism" at Moravian College's Young Americans for Liberty meeting, December 7.

An op-ed, "Language matters for a community to be disability friendly," by Christie Gilson, assistant professor of education, was published in the Morning Call, December 3. She is a member of the Lehigh Valley Partnership for a Disability Friendly Community.

Jim West, professor and chair of economics and business, was interviewed on WFMZ Channel 69 December 7 regarding the tax compromise bill before Congress.
