The gatekeeper of Moravian College and a can-do carpenter whos always there when we need him were winners of the staff recognition awards, announced at the Colleges holiday dinner December 15.
Lou Ann Vlahovic, who has worked at Moravian almost a decade, received the Lucy A. McCall secretarial-clerical award. She is the campus switchboard operator and also secretary to four academic departments and 20 faculty members in Collier Hall of Science.
She serves as mother hen to a bunch of science professors, wrote one of her nominators. Her diplomacy holds together a building full of biologists, physicists, chemists, and computer scientists.
Lou Ann also can tell you how to program your voicemail or untangle the string of numbers that makes up the Colleges long distance dialing code.
She cheerfully gives whatever assistance she can to faculty, students, staff, and visitors, said another professor. And she is always willing to do additional work.
Kevin Haas, who earned the award for facilities and service staff members, lives up to the standards of Louis Mirra, its namesake. For more than 10 years, Kevin has been a model of dependability and professional courtesy.
His reputation for outstanding carpentry and mechanical troubleshooting is so high that many in the College and Seminary specify him in their work orders. He has been praised for the consistent high quality of his work and his readiness to take on any task, no matter how challenging.
Though there could be only two winners, the Human Resources Department sponsored a breakfast December 19 to honor employees nominated for both the McCall and Mirra awards.
