Brain Waves

Mind over matter: Melissa Drost measures the brain waves of the young man in the rubber cap. The alert young scientist to her right is Emma Fox, 3, daughter of Cecilia Fox, assistant professor of biology.

Students of Cecilia Fox, assistant professor of biology, participated in a servicelearning project, “Brain Awareness Day,” March 19 at the DaVinci Discovery Center of Science and Technology in South Bethlehem.

Biology and nursing students— Rena Drezner, Melissa Drost, Bernie Rafferty, Sarah Mueller, and Erin Killian, all ’05; Eric Peterson ’06; and Dana DeAngelis, Kelly Wight, Jenny Poulson, Lindsay Hopper, and Heidi Lurvey, all ’08— introduced K-8 children to the brain and spinal cord. They also recorded brain waves and tested the children’s reflexes.

Other activities included building neurons out of candy, the Stroop effect, a comparative look at animal brains, memory tests, and a demonstration with Mr. Egghead to teach the importance of wearing helmets.

Cecilia took Melissa and Sarah to the ninth annual NEURON (Northeast Undergraduate Research Organization for Neuroscience) conference, April 16 at Hunter College, New York City. She gave a presentation on Brain Awareness Day as an outreach activity.

Then she and the students presented their research findings on “Administration of Selenium as a Protective Agent in the 6-OHDA Lesion Model of Parkinson’s Disease.”
