Having an Impact

The last Impact awards were given out during the final two weeks of the term. They went to:

• David Bennett ’88, chaplain, for his work as labor organizer, driver, and construction site manager when he took 15 students to North Carolina over spring break to build houses for Habitat for Humanity. Given by Frank Crouch ’80 (M.D.V.), dean of the Seminary.

• Anne Dutlinger, chair of the art department, for grace under pressure in helping students cope with the death of David Evans ’04 in a car accident a week before graduation. Given by Beverly Kochard.

• Blair Flintom, man of all work and jack of all trades for the Music Department and the Moravian College Music Institute. Given by Priscilla Payne Hurd, chair of the board of trustees.

• Marilyn Ramsey, assistant director of admissions, for revitalizing Blue and Grey Days. Given by Dennis Domchek, vice president for enrollment.

• Steve Simmons, director of continuing education for the Seminary. For his work with the Carpenter grant and the diversity initiatives that have emerged from it, especially the Urban Ministry program. Given by Ann Stehney.

• April Vari, dean of student development. For exceptional work on the common reading for the Class of 2007. They read The Hemingway Book Club of Kosovo and met its author, Paula Huntley. The book sparked discussion and debate, including a presentation on Serbian history and policy by Borko Milosev ’04, an international student from Serbia, and a counterweight visit to campus by Michael Parenti, an opponent of U.S. policy in the Balkans. Given by President Rokke.

Vice presidents’ awards are $500, President’s awards are $750, and chairman’s awards are $1,000.
