Moravian's entry to the Landmark Conference Logo Contest.

Chronicle of a Logo

A design created by Ted Colegrove '07 represented Moravian College in a contest to create a logo for the newly-created Landmark Conference. The new NCAA Division III athletic association, formed by Moravian College and seven other institutions, established the competition earlier this year. Each school in the conference chose a single student-created design to submit; the final selection was made by the member institutions’ presidents (who hadn't seen the designs and didn’t know which school submitted which logo).

Ted's design (above) stood out among dozens of Moravian entries for its emphasis on the educational philosophies and high academic standards of the Conference’s member institutions. The landmark-like graphic also suggests the strength and the solid foundation embodied by the schools, as well as the Conference’s intention to stand out not only in athletics but in academics. As Moravian's choice for the Landmark Logo Contest, Ted's image earned him a $500 prize provided by the Conference commission. Moravian's runner-up Doug Gunderson, whose contemporary design featured an upward-shooting star, earned him a $100 prize.

While Ted's creation was well-received by the Conference presidents, they favored a design with a more sports-oriented look. The winning entry, announced on February 7, was submitted by Susquehanna University. It features curved "Landmark" text and eight stars representing the member schools (Moravian College, Catholic University, Drew University, Goucher College, Juniata College, University of Scranton, Susquehanna University, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy).
