Publications

Bernardo Cantens, associate professor and chair of philosophy, had several articles published in recent months. They include: "On the Metaphysics of Cultural Identity: A Darwinian Account" Latino Studies 7 (2009): 167-196; "Comments on Jaime Nubiola's 'Charles Peirce and the Hispanic World'"APA Newsletter on Hispanic/Latino Issues: Special Topic on Hispanic and American Philosophy, Spring 2009; and "Dewey’s Pragmatism and Social-Political Philosophy: Comments on Rosa Mayorga's 'Hispanic Philosophy, American Pragmatism, and Cuba'" APA Newsletter on Hispanic-Latino Issues: Special Topic on Hispanic and American Philosophy, Spring 2009.

A book review by Dana S. Dunn, professor of psychology and director of the Learning in Common curriculum, appeared in the September 16, 2009 issue of PsycCRITIQUES, Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 54 (no. 37), article 2. “Defining the Discipline for the Student Audience: A Concise and Direct College Dictionary” reviews the APA College Dictionary of Psychology by the American Psychological Association.

"Grief Is Many Things: Current Perspectives on Bereavement," a book review co-authored by Dana S. Dunn and his former student Thomas Civitello '09 appeared in the September 2009 issue of the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology.  Handbook of Bereavement Research and Practice: Advances in Theory and Integration edited by Margaret S. Stroebe, Robert O. Hansson, Henk Schut, & Wolfgang Stroebe is the subject of the review.

Melanie Davis, adjunct professor of sociology, has been awarded Certified Sexuality Educator status by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists. Davis is a doctoral candidate in Human Sexuality Education at Widener University. Her research is on physician and marriage and family therapist provisions of and attitudes about patient sexuality education and the factors influencing referrals to sexuality educators.

Lt. Ashley Heiberger '00, adjunct instructor of sociology and staff lieutenant with the Bethlehem Police Department, was recently appointed co-chair of the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association's Education and Training Committee.  Also, Ashley currently serves on the executive board of the Law Enforcement Association of Planning and Research Directors. He is the son of Thelma Scheifele Heiberger '41.
Political science professor Gary Olson's piece "Afghanistan: 'Necessary' War for Empire" was published by Common Dreams on September 14, 2009 and subsequently reprinted on several other websites.

President Christopher Thomforde appeared as a guest on the Bruce Davis Radio Show, "The Lehigh Valley Means Business," WGPA 1100 AM on September 18, 2009.
