Santo Marabella’s First Book Delivers Workplace Advice
Inspired by his recent work as a newspaper columnist, Santo D. Marabella, M.B.A., D.S.W., has released his first book with a focus on renewing the energy in the workplace for the greater good of the employee and the business. The Practical Prof: Simple Lessons for Anyone Who Works! targets working adults – not just executives or managers, but anyone who works – providing “lessons” on how to succeed and enjoy managing yourself at work, or managing your workplace.
Marabella, a professor of management at Moravian College, cites the recent economic downturn for creating an unproductive workplace environment, where high stress, fewer resources and more responsibility has translated to lower morale. “Essentially, what has happened is the spirits of the employee have been depleted,” he says. “What I hope is that this book can renew their spirit and recharge their energy.”
The Practical Prof, through 13 simple lessons, attempts to “liberate passion, enhance satisfaction and increase productivity,” Marabella adds. “And I don’t think it needs to be complicated.”
About a year ago, Marabella began writing a monthly column for the Reading Eagle’s Business Weekly, providing workplace advice through humor and a conversational writing style. Always a writer, having completed several plays, a musical and a short film, Marabella didn’t necessarily see the venture into newspapers leading to a book, but explained the project grew organically. “I’ve based the book’s content on the newspaper column, but I’ve added material by including practical ways to reinforce and apply the ‘lessons,’” he says.
This book isn’t just for managers. I tried to really take that into account because not everyone is, will be, or wants to be a manager.”
– Santo D. Marabella
Marabella concentrated on making the book easily digestible, where the lessons can be absorbed quickly and implemented immediately. “The book’s lessons cover everyone that works, on every level,” he adds. “This book isn’t just for managers. I tried to really take that into account because not everyone is, will be, or wants to be a manager. Employees themselves really play an important role in the workplace, and this book is in many ways for them.”
Marabella hopes to continue “the reader’s experience beyond the last page of the book,” developing questions for readers to consider and a personal notes section, as well as access to his robust The Practical Prof website. Each reader receives a two-month free trial subscription to The Prof’s Office Hours, a monthly, live two-way video chat as a bonus feature.
