Welcome to Moravian-Muhlenberg Rivalry Week!

Sodexo Purchases Trophy to Commemorate This Saturday's Football Matchup

Is it a rivalry if there isn't a trophy to commemorate it? Interesting question. Thankfully, the athletic departments and student-athletes at Moravian College and Muhlenberg College are christening a trophy at this Saturday's football game, acknowledging the friendly competition between the area institutions.

As part of new Rivalry Week initiative, the winner will be handed a nearly three-foot trophy, presented by Sodexo, to acknowledge the victory for the next calendar year, said Mark Kopenhaver, director of dining services at Moravian College.

“From what I’ve seen of the trophy, it looks like the Stanley Cup,” said Kopenhaver, who hopes to have the trophy on display in the HUB on Wednesday, Nov. 13. “It has the previous football records on it, as well as the Moravian M on one side and the Muhlenberg M on the other.”

According to Kopenhaver, Sodexo, the professional dining service company for the two institutions, in an effect to positively promote the rivalry, came up with the trophy idea. After meeting with the colleges’ athletic directors and head football coaches this summer, gaining their insight, advice and approval, the trophy was approved.

“We’re trying to slowly build some momentum around this week, similar to that Homecoming,” added Kopenhaver. As part of that momentum, the HUB and dining services are offering several spirit-filled events this week.

“This week is something we hope is fun and engages more folks in the spirit of football.”

The HUB kicked off the week on Monday, Nov. 11, with a banner competition and cash prizes presented to the banners with the best slogans.

On Tuesday, Nov. 12, IMPACT is sponsoring “Make it and Take It” picture frames from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the HUB lounge. It is free and open to the campus community. IMPACT will provide the supplies.
The next day, Wednesday, Nov. 13, interested HUB visitors can pose for pictures with Mo, Moravian’s No. 1 greyhound, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the HUB lounge. It will be the perfect image to fit in the previous day’s frame!

A Spirit Dinner, sponsored by Sodexo, will be offered on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the Marketplace. The dining room will be “decked out in blue and grey, and we will have a funny-themed menu,” said Kopenhaver.

On Friday, Nov. 15, IMPACT is sponsoring laser tag, beginning at 8 p.m., in the ARC. The campus community is encouraged to wear school colors that day as well.

“This week is something we hope is fun and engages more folks in the spirit of football,” said Ann Claussen, director of the HUB and event management. “We are excited to support our athletes and have a good time throughout the week leading to the game.”

Senior Rob Moyer, Moravian’s starting quarterback, explained that the College's community support provides a definite advantage entering Saturday’s contest with the Mules.

“The Muhlenberg game is a very special game for us that has a lot of emotion in it,” he said. “We all play for the love of the game and knowing this is our last game ever is very sad. It is a game we will remember for the rest of our lives. It will definitely be a very emotional Saturday for the seniors.”
