10 REASONS Moravian University is a Little Revolutionary

1. Moravian University hasn't just been around the block—it FOUNDED the block.

Moravian University

Moravian University is the sixth-oldest college in the country. Founded in 1742 by a 16-year-old girl, we were the first to educate women.  And as of 2018, the Moravian University student bookstore is the Moravian Book Shop, also known as the the oldest continuously operating bookstore in the world!

2. Moravian University was COED before it was the norm.

The men’s and women’s schools merged in 1954 to become the first co-educational higher education institution in the Lehigh Valley.

3. Our professors see our students as research partners.

Through our Student Opportunities for Academic Research (SOAR) program, students engage with faculty on a new level. Each summer, dozens of students put theory into practice alongside faculty mentors, conducting research based on their own proposals. Some faculty members, like neuroscience professor Cecilia Fox, rely on SOAR students to bring new and fresh points of view to their life’s work. Fox and her students have researched methods for easing symptoms in patients with Parkinson’s Disease.

4. Apples on Apples on Apples.

All incoming freshmen are equipped with their very own Macbook Pro® and iPad® when they register for classes. We give our students the technology they need to succeed in a tech savvy world. In fact, Moravian University has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2018-2021.

5. Our cloud is HUGE.

We won the 2015 Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Global Breakthrough Award for creating a personalized and connected experience for students and faculty through a "Unified Access" network. High quality access to wired and wireless networks is now available for any user and any device campus-wide. Moravian University’s network guarantees a blazing fast connection and an unfailing Wifi experience, no matter what time of day.

6. Moravian University keeps its campus green.

The College has many environmental initiatives, including the cataloguing of every tree on campus in our Tree Inventory and a dedicated fundraising effort for greener updates to buildings and materials. With a well-established student run organization named ECO, Moravian University actively seeks out preserving its historic environment while ensuring a more sustainable future.

Jalen Synder-Scipio ’17 combined football and nursing, which led him to discover how the strength to be selfless can help him be a little revolutionary every day. Audrey McSain ’16 combined her interest in ethics with a passion for protecting the environment—a combination that can change the world. We have English poetry scholars that bodybuild and biochemistry majors who love Greek life—all unique, all passionate, all Moravian University.

We are one of only 3% of American colleges designated as an All-Steinway School, ensuring our music students get access to the premier instruments in their fields. Steinway is insisted on by musical professionals worldwide as the preeminent instrument in composition. And since all our music majors are trained in piano, they now have unlimited access to the industry gold standard.

9. Our alumni can do anything.

Check out the power of the liberal arts in action: David Zinczenko ’91, NY Times bestselling author, and publisher, started a global health and wellness media company, Galvanized. Shane Burcaw ’14 has become a published author, Emmy-winning filmmaker and advocate for muscular dystrophy. Our own Bryon Grigsby’s ’90 English degree and passion for Moravian University led him to become the President of his alma mater. And with 16,000 more out there like them, our vast network of alumni puts a world of opportunity at our students’ fingertips.
