Team Hits Home for Fifth
Straight Year
The
Greyhound softball team competed in the NCAA Division III Regionals
for the fifth straight year. Moravian, the second-seeded team in
the five-team regional hosted by Cabrini College, fell to third-seeded
Rowan (N.J.) University, 4-2 in nine innings, and fourth-seeded
and regional champion Salisbury (Md.) University, 7-4. The Greyhounds
finished the 2002 season with a 34-8 overall record, a school record
for wins by any sport. Moravian also won its third straight Commonwealth
Conference Championship. Five team members were named to the 2002
National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region Teams. Sophomore
third baseman Janelle Brey was a First Team All-East Region selection
and Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year. Senior pitcher Rachel
Mowrey, Commonwealth Conference Pitcher of the Year, senior second
baseman Laurie Rentschler, and freshman shortstop Heather Bortz,
Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year, were each Second Team
honorees, while sophomore outfielder Jessica Esposito was a Third
Team selection.
