Throws to Win at Penn Relays
Sophomore
Christina Scherwin captured first place in the college women’s
javelin championship throw to lead Moravian as the 108th Penn Relays,
hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. She recorded a winning
throw of 52.86 meters (173 feet, 5 inches), which was 2.84 meters
ahead of the next finisher. An international student from Denmark,
Scherwin threw the javelin for the first time in her Moravian career
at the Quaker Invitational hosted by the University of Pennsylvania
in late March and finished in first place with the best throw at
the NCAA Division III level this season and the 13th best throw
of 2002 in the world at the time. Her toss of 55.99 meters (183
feet, 8 inches) was well over the NCAA Division III automatic qualifying
standard of 41.00 meters, and she won the event by more that 12
meters.
