Christina Scherwin ’04 captured her second straight NCAA
Division III National Championship in the javelin on the second
day of competition at the 2003 NCAA Division Outdoor National Championships.
Scherwin, who won the 2002 title with a toss of 51.69 meters (169
feet 7 inches), broke the meet record and set the all-time NCAA
Division III record with a throw of 55.34 meters (181 feet 7 inches)
in this year’s competition. Scherwin broke the record of
51.94 meters (170 feet 5 inches) set by Jodi Smiley from the University
of Wisconsin at Lacrosse back in 1984. She is a four-time All-American
after finishing fifth in the shot put at the 2003 outdoor meet
to earn Moravian a total of 14 points and a tie for 18th place
in the meet. Scherwin also earned All-American accolades at the
2003 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships with a fourth-place
finish in the shot put as the Greyhounds tied for 31st place in
the meet.
