Grade: A

Students who go on to become teachers have traditionally been Moravian’s largest contribution to the world. Every so often, the state checks up on how we’re doing.

This year was it: the Pennsylvania Department of Education review. For Moravian’s Education Department, that meant almost a year’s worth of self-assessment to provide the PDE team with everything from faculty credentials to student-teachers’ in-class projects. The binder with all the assessments and supporting materials was almost five inches thick.

The PDE team came to town on a Sunday in April, met with students and faculty of the department on Monday, and were gone by Tuesday. They left word that the department had passed with flying colors. Their official report will come in the fall.

That’s five years of official approval before the department goes through the whole process again.
