Jason Robert Bell, visiting assistant professor of art, offered
a course in the spring semester in performance art: an interactive
kind of work in which the artist not only creates but performs the
art. On April 6, his class strutted its stuff in a puppet parade-
with themselves as puppets and puppeteers-through downtown Bethlehem
from south to north campus. In the picture above, Alexis Vergalla
'06, a poet and creative writer as well as an art student, manipulates
a variation on an Indonesian rod puppet. Bell said the uniting of
art and artist teaches the students to express "largerthan- life
ideas about themselves and to give people in the everyday world
something unexpected."
