300 Winning Games
A hard-fought 85-77 win over Muhlenberg College on January 26
was also the 300th victory for Moravian head coach Mary Beth Spirk,
who now has a career record of 300-149 in her 17 seasons at the
College. Spirk ranks in the top 45 among active coaches in winning
percentage and the top 35 active coaches in victories.
In her time at Moravian, the College has developed one of the country’s
premier women’s basketball programs. Spirk has coached the
Greyhounds to seven Middle Atlantic Conference Southeast crowns,
four NCAA Division III Tournament bids, three NCAA “Sweet
16” appearances, three MAC South titles, a pair of MAC crowns,
and a spot in the 1992 NCAA championship game.
The 1992 women’s basketball season was the most successful
season the College has ever experienced. Their 31-2 campaign culminated
in hosting the Final Four, though Moravian lost the national championship
game 79-75 to Alma College. Spirk’s efforts that year netted
her the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s national
Coach of the Year award, as well as MAC and Mid-Atlantic Region
honors, both for the third straight year.
