Graphic artist Istvan Oros z of Budapest uses traditional
printing techniques such as woodcuts and engravings to create works
to tease and fascinate the eye of the viewer. His visual puzzles are
carefully rendered, often resurrecting fantastic visions of the past
to lead the viewer into his trompe l'oeil world. Some of his works are
political growing from changes in Eastern Europe; he has also created
graphics books covers, theatrical posters, paintings, and illustrations,
all rendered with meticulous attention to detail and a unique visualperspective.
A true Renaissance man, Mr. Orosz is a college professor
and film director as well as an artist and designer. His study of the
work of M. C. Escher, particularly Escher's mirrors and reflections,
led to his creation of a work in special tribute to M. C. Escher. Mr.
Orosz was one of several contemporary artists inspired by Escher who
participated in an international Escher Centennial congress in June,
1998. Payne Gallery's exhibit is accompanied by a brochure including
an essay by Dr. Doris Schattschneider of the Moravian College Mathematics
Department, an internationally recognized expert on the symmetry work
of M. C. Escher.
The Payne Gallery is located in the Priscilla Payne Hurd
Center for Music and Art on the Church Street Campus of Moravian College
at the corner of Main and Church Streets in downtown Bethlehem The Gallery
is open to the public free of charge daily except Monday 11:00 a.m.
