The enchanting sound of Scottish bagpipes and drums will
fill the air at Moravian College for the next few weeks. Moravian College
is playing host to the Balmoral School of Piping and Drumming, which
brings some of the world's top Scottish pipers and drummers to teach
and perform during three week-long sessions. Over 80 students are enrolled
in each of the sessions, including some from as far away as Hong Kong
and Japan.
On Thursday, July 30 at 8:00 p.m., there will be free
public concert featuring the award winning Balmoral staff and their
students. The concert will be held in the Foy Concert Hall at Moravian
College's Church Street Campus, Main and Church streets, Bethlehem.
This marks the fifth year that the Balmoral School has
selected Moravian College to serve as one of its five regional sites
nationwide for this special program. According to George Balderose,
Director of the Pittsburgh-based Balmoral School, "Moravian College
was selected because of its excellent reputation for music instruction
and great facilities. Moravian is also in an ideal location for attracting
students from New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia." Another
reason is Scot Walker, a Moravian College faculty member from Emmaus,
who was rated #1 Overall Solo Piping Competitor seven times by the
Eastern U.S. Pipe Band Association. Joining Scot Walker
on the Barmoral School staff are: Alasdair Gillies, winner of numerous
solo competitions in Scotland, including the Former Winners March, Starthspey,
and the Northern Meeting in Inverness (eight-time winner); Andy White,
champion Scottish snare drummer and author of a book on drum technique;
and, George Balderose, an award winning smallpipe player and instructor
who has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony.
