"Versus," a dance concert featuring Roko Kawai,
the acclaimed dancer and choreographer, will be held at Moravian College
in Foy Concert Hall on Monday, October 5, at 8:00 p.m.
"‘Versus’ will bring together polar opposites
and show what happens when they meet, clash, or merge," said Kawai.
Her work distills influence from a variety of forms, including Japanese
dance, figure skating, American modern dance, and improvisation.
Kawai is the director and choreographer of Roko Kawai
Projects, a multi-year exploration of Japanese and American personal
history with collaborating musicians, dancers, and theater designers
from Asian-, African-, and Caucasian-American ethnicities. She was a
three-time winner of the Pew Charitable Trusts’ Philadelphia Repertory
Development Initiative, an emerging fellow of the Pennsylvania Council
on the Arts, and most recently, the sole Philadelphia awardee of DanceLink,
a four-state touring and commissioning program.
Recognized for her strong and articulate voice, Roko Kawai
is also an active educator as well as an advocate for Asian American,
Japanese, and cultural arts. She was co-choreographer in Isabel Hon’s
six-week youth movement residency, served as Japanese artist-in-residence
for the Visiting Folk Artist Program, and was on the faculty for the
National Association of Independent School’s Diversity ’92
retreat. She is on the board of the Asian Arts Initiative, serves on
the Painted Bride Dance Advisory Committee and coordinates educational
programs at the Folklife Center at International House.
Tickets are available now at the HUB desk on Moravian's
