News Release
September 1998
Moravian College will host a timely dialogue between political
consultant James Carville, campaign manager for President Bill Clinton,
and John Sununu, co-host of CNN’s "Crossfire" and former
chief of staff for President Bush. The political fireworks will start
to fly on Wednesday, October 21, at 8:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall at Moravian
College in Bethlehem, PA. The program, part of the Cohen Arts and Lecture
Series, will include introductory remarks from each speaker, a segment
of political debate, followed by an interactive question and answer
period.
James Carville, one of the best known and most colorful
political consultants of our time, has managed more political campaigns
that anyone in U.S. history. From his early days in Louisiana, the "Ragin’
Cajun" has specialized in winning elections for Democrats. He has
also served as a consultant to the Liberal Party of Canada, the staff
of the English Prime Minister Tony Blair, and for other international
campaigns in Greece, Brazil, and Honduras. He is married to Mary Matalin,
deputy campaign manager for George Bush’s 1992 campaign; the couple
co-wrote the best seller, All’s Fair: Love, War and Running For
President.
John H. Sununu served three terms as New Hampshire’s
governor prior to joining the White House staff. As chief of staff for
President Bush, Sununu oversaw the daily operations of the White House
and served as counselor to the president. A former engineer, small businessman
and community leader, he attended MIT at the undergraduate and graduate
levels and received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. He also served
as co-host of CNN’s nightly "Crossfire" discussion program
from 1992-1998.
Carville and Sununu’s appearance marks the 15th
anniversary of the Cohen series at Moravian College. In past years,
the series has brought to Bethlehem such notables as the New York Philomusica,
former President Jimmy Carter, author Kurt Vonnegut, former governor
Mario Cuomo, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.
The Cohen Arts and Lectures Series at Moravian College
was established in 1984 by Bernard and Bertha Cohen, who were active
in Bethlehem business and community affairs until their 1976 relocation
to Boca Raton, FL. Bertha Cohen is a 1937 Moravian graduate and a former
member of the college’s board of trustees. Bernard Cohen is a
member of the Lehigh University class of 1936.
Tickets for the event are $10 and are available at Haupert
Union Building, Moravian College, Monocacy and Locust streets, Bethlehem;
Moravian Bookshop, 428 Main St., Bethlehem; The Baum School of Art,
510 Linden Street, Allentown; C. Leslie Smith, Village West, Allentown;
and Bixler’s Jewelers, 24 Center Square, Easton. Proceeds from
the performance benefit the Moravian College Scholarship Fund.
