Moravian College has been selected by Johns Hopkins University
to host a 1998 College Colloquium for area high school students and
their parents. The colloquium will be held on Saturday, October 3rd
from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Prosser Auditorium, Haupert Union
Building at Moravian’s Main Street campus. One hundred talented
Lehigh Valley area high school students and their families are expected
to attend.
The program is designed to give high school students and
their families access to experienced academic advisors - directors of
admission and financial aid, counselors, professors, and college students.
The program gives participants a general overview of the college process:
what to consider, how to prepare, and what to expect when you get there.
Presenters representing a variety of college’s and universities
will provide insight into the admission process, academic options, campus
life and financial aid.
Dr. Phyllis Finger, gifted support specialist, Easton
PA Area School District will welcome the participants to the College
Colloquia. Bernard Story, dean of admission and financial aid, Moravian
College will provide an overview of the admission process and outline
financial aid opportunities. Judy Balthazar, assistant dean, Bryn Mawr
College, will moderate a discussion with a panel of college students
representing area colleges and universities.
Current college students from Moravian College, Lehigh
University, LaSalle University, Bryn Mawr College, and Swarthmore University
will share their experiences to help the 10th and 11th graders prepare
for when they go to college.
Tracy Matthew, associate dean of admissions, Swarthmore
College, will moderate a panel of experts on admissions and financial
aid, including Judy Balthazar, assistant dean, Bryn Mawr College, Gwen
Peischl, coordinator of guidance, Easton Area High School, Stephen Cassel,
director of financial aid, and Bernard Story, dean of admission and
financial aid, Moravian College.
In the Afternoon, students will attend a mini-session
called College Life while parents attend mini-sessions on financial
aid and college admissions that will answer their questions and provide
more detailed information. An academic panel, led by Dr. Theresa Dougal,
assistant professor of English, Moravian College, will discuss college
preparation. She will be joined by Dr. Karen Kurvink, associate professor
of biology, Moravian College, Dr. Robert Weinburg, Associate professor
of the history, Swarthmore University, Dr. Bruce Anderson, assistant
professor of chemistry, Muhlenberg College, and Margaret McCoey, assistant
professor of multimedia design, LaSalle University.
