Students, faculty and staff at Moravian College are teaming
up to present a number of activities to celebrate Black History Month.
An art exhibit, "Teaching Tolerance," will be displayed in
the Haupert Union Building on Moravian’s Main Street Campus, beginning
on Friday, February 5. The exhibit will feature 15 works centering on
civil rights that were created by Moravian College graphic design students.
The exhibit will also feature works of art created by African-Americans,
from the personal collections of Moravian College staff.
The Moravian College Music Department will bring two outstanding
African-American performers to its Church Street campus to celebrate
Black History Month. Wenonah Brooks, a noted jazz vocalist with roots
in gospel music, will perform "Notes from Nona…" on
Saturday, February 20, at 8 p.m. in Peter Hall. Wenonah’s style
reflects the influences of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, and Carmen
McRae. On Sunday, February 28, world famous composer, arranger and soloist,
Charles Kennedy, Jr., will perform as "H.T. Burleigh" in Foy
Concert Hall at 4 p.m. H.T. Burleigh popularized the spirituals while
devoting his life to music and the service of God. Admission for each
performance is $8 for general admission, $5 for senior citizens, students,

The College is hosting an evening of readings from African-American
literature on Wednesday, February 24, 9 p.m. at the Wednesday Night
Coffeehouse on Moravian’s Church Street campus. Among those doing
the readings will be noted author and Moravian College professor Dr.
Joyce Hinnefield. Other readings are currently in the planning stages.
Additional activities include a film series featuring
the following movies: "Mississippi Burning" on Friday, February
5, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 7, at 2 p.m.; "Glory"
on Saturday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday February 21 at 2 p.m.;
and "Beloved" on Saturday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday
28 at 2 p.m.
The College is currently planning to bring a gospel choir
and lecture series to campus in the coming weeks. For more information
