Ron Helmuth was recently named the director of the Center
for Information Technology (CIT) at Moravian College and Moravian Theological
Seminary. He comes to Moravian after serving in a similar position at
Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he served
as director of information systems, guiding an eight-person department.
Ron holds a B.A. in social studies from New College in
Sarasota, Florida, and a M.B.A. in accounting and information systems
from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University.
Ron has had 13 years of experience at IBM in both engineering and management
roles.
He taught undergraduate classes in data networking and
graduate classes in education in using technology to enhance learning.
He spent two years in Central America and worked for a year as a bilingual
program specialist in the Federal Migrant and Farmworkers’ Program.
His plans include making computing on campus invisible,
like a utility such as electricity and phone service. "It should
be transparent," he said, "because it’s reliable, and
it’s easy to use." He also hopes to strengthen the Web service
to alums, and help Moravian use electronic information technologies
to enhance teaching and learning.
