Dr. Mary Arenas will present "The Disappearing Islands
— The Azores," a delightful evening of armchair travel on
Monday, March 15 at 7:00 p.m. The roundtable discussion—slide
and lecture presentation—will be held in Moravian College’s
Prosser Auditorium. The Azores were known to the Phoenicians; visited
by Norsemen; forgotten for four centuries; appeared on an Italian map
of 1351, and re-discovered in 1427 by Portuguese seafarers.
Dr. Mary Arenas is a professor of Foreign Languages at
Moravian. Dr. Arenas earned her Ph.D. and M.A. degrees from George Washington
University, Washington, D.C. In her undergraduate career she also studied
at the University of Madrid, Spain, earning her B.A. from Rockford College,
Illinois. She has been a member of the Moravian College faculty since
1963; is Study Abroad Adviser; and served as Department Chair of Foreign
Languages for thirteen years. During January terms Dr. Arenas also conducted
study trips with students to Spain, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and England.
Additional travels included trips to Western Europe, Mexico and South
America. With her husband, Juan, Mary helped plan, prepare and provision
cruises on their thirty-two foot sailboat, "Zagala", for a
six-legged circumnavigation of the North Atlantic Ocean between 1991
- 1995. During the summers of 1991 and 1992 she spent a total of five
weeks on the islands of Faial and Terceira, two of the nine Azores Islands.
