Tom Chapin will give a children's concert entitled
"Tom Chapin and Friends" Saturday, April 17, at Moravian College's
Foy Concert Hall. Tom Chapin is an entertainer who can delight audiences
of all ages. Billboard Magazine says that he is "one of those natural-born
entertainers who, with nothing more than guitar in hand, can totally
captivate." Tom's warm personality is reflected in his singing
and songwriting. His music can reach out to anybody, no maffer which
generation or stereotype they belong to. Chapin says, "Mine is
not a traditional music, but it comes from a tradition. My musical heroes
are people like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie who wrote an sang real
songs for real people; for everyone, old, young, and in between."
Chapin has made recordings on the Sony Wonder label, which
is geared for 4 to 11 year olds and their families. These recordings
have received critical and popular acclaim. Chapin has worked with John
Forster, Michael Mark, and Jon Cobert to create a number of children's
songs. Songs such as Family Tree (1988), Moonboat (1989), Mother Earth
(1990), Billy The Squid (1992), and ZaQ Zi2 (1994) have won awards from
the American Library Association, Parents' Choice, the New York Music
Awards, the National Association of Parenting Publications, and Parents
Magazine. Chapin received the Parent's Choice Award and was nominated
for a Grammy Award for Around the World and Back AQain (1996), Chapin
has also made a concert video, This Pretty Planet: Tom Chapin Live In
Concert, which features live performances of 13 children's songs.
In addition to his recordings for children, Chapin also
writes songs for adult audiences. He has recorded six albums of adult
music: Life is Like That (1976), In the City of Mercy(1982), Let Me
Back Into Your Life (1986), and So Nice to Come Home (1994). Join the
Jubilee (1996), was his first live concert album. Another live recording,
DoinQ Our Job, with John McCutcheon, was released in October 1997.
Chapin has also touched audiences by hosting several television
shows. Between 1971 and 1976, he hosted ABC-TV's Peabody and Emmy Award
winning children's show, Make a Wish.. He has also hosted National Geographic's
Explorer series. Chapin has published a book/cassette package titled
Sin a Whale Son, which is made up of environmental songs. He has also
narrated a series of children's books that benefit the Humane Society
of the United States for The Benefactory.
Chapin works for many charitable organizations, which
include save The Children. Chapin is a member of the Board of Directors
of WHY (World Hunger Year), which is a hunger organization founded by
Tom's late brother Harry Chapin.
Tom Chapin and Friends will perform Saturday, April 17,
1999 at 3:00 p.m. at Moravian College's Foy Concert Hall, Church Street
Campus, Main and Church streets, Bethlehem. Tickets are $10 General
