Moravian College is partnering with Philadelphia College
of Osteopathic Medicine to offer, via telecommunications, an intensive
three-week non-credit preparatory course in clinical case-based biochemistry
and molecular biology.
Funded by a grant from CAPE (Center for Agile Pennsylvania
Education), the project is a distance-education venture to make available
the review of subject matter crucial to first-year success in professional
schools. Students heading for medical, veterinary, optometry, dental,
podiatry, and graduate school will find that this course deepens their
knowledge and prepares them for the rigors of professional school coursework
in biochemistry and molecular biology.
Topics include energy production and utilization, biological
foundations, regulation of metabolism, lipoproteins, DNA and protein
synthesis, and biochemical adaptations to health and disease.
Enrollment is possible either at the Philadelphia campus,
where the course is delivered live, or at Moravian College in Bethlehem,
where students will take the course in a telecommunications-equipped
classroom.
Class begins July 6 and runs until July 23. It meets weekdays
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and includes case studies and practice examinations
typical of those students will encounter in professional school. The
$800 fee includes full course tuition, textbook, syllabus, problem solving
clinical cases, and the practice examinations.
The instructor is Dr. Eugene Mochan, Ph.D., D.O., and
Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Philadelphia
College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has taught the course for five years.
