October 1999
Susan Spafford, Miss Pennsylvania of 1999-2000 and second
runner-up in the Miss America Pageant, will perform at Moravian College
on two separate occasions during October.
• Tuesday, October 5th 11:30 AM in Foy Hall. At
the Music Department’s weekly performance class, Miss Spafford
will play a tango by contemporary Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla,
accompanied by guitarist Daniel Hull. She will also speak about the
"Save the Music" project, and answer any questions from
the audience.
• Saturday, October 16th 5:30 PM in Clewell Dining
Hall.Miss Spafford will be a guest speaker at the annual Music Alliance
dinner. This event precedes the Moravian College Chamber Symphony
Concert in Peter Hall at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $30. This price includes
hors d’oeuvres, a buffet dinner, Miss Spafford’s comments,
a brief pre-concert talk, and admission to the concert. The evening
program features Schubert’s Overture in the Italian Style, Strauss’
Serenade for Winds, Holst’s St. Paul’s Suite, and Haydn’s
Symphony no. 104. Also, Lauren Nicholas (’01), the winner of
the Concerto Competition, will perform the first movement of Glazunov’s
Saxophone Concerto. Seating in Clewell is limited, so please phone

Susan Spaford is a very talented violinist and passionate
spokesperson for music education. She is currently a graduate student
at the Eastman Conservatory in Rochester, New York. One of her pet projects,
the VH1 "Save the Music" program, involves the collection
and restoration of unused musical instruments which are then donated
to elementary schools.
