Moravian
Theological Seminary and the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Moravian
College will present a lecture, Black Sacred Music and Ministry in the
21st Century, on Tuesday, April 4, 10:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. The speaker
will be Reverend Dr. Jeremiah Wright, Pastor, Trinity United Church
of Christ, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Wright is recognized as a leading
theologian, pastor, and author. His lecture will provide a historical
and developmental overview of Black Sacred Music in the African American
Diaspora. The lecture will be held in the Saal at held in the Seminary’s
Bahnson Center, 60 W. Locust Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. A Continental
Breakfast and Fellowship will be held from 9:00-9:45 a.m. Dr. Wright
will conduct a book signing at noon where a number of his books will
be available for purchase.
Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. became Pastor of Trinity
United Church of Christ (TUCC) in February of 1972. Within a matter
of months he demonstrated an understanding and deep commitment to help
TUCC achieve its motto and vision. The motto "Unashamedly Black
and Unapologetically Christian" was officially adopted by the congregation.
TUCC’s membership currently exceeds 7,000 and in
May 1977 a new 2,700 seat worship center was dedicated. The membership
continues to grow numerically and spiritually with large numbers of
members tithing and participating in bible classes. Over 60 ministries
are offered to enhance our Christian journey.
Pastor Wright holds a Doctor of Ministry Degree from United
Theological Seminary, a Masters degree from Howard University, an additional
Masters degree from the University of Chicago and three honorary doctoral
degrees. He has lectured at most seminaries and Universities in the
nation, and has represented Trinity and The United Church of Christ
around the world. He is recognized as a leading theologian and pastor
and has published four books and numerous articles.
Pastor Wright has stated that his vision for Trinity is
"…to be a worshiping church, a spirit-filled church, a praying
church, a tithing church, a bible-based church, a progressive church,
a politically aware and active church, a love-centered church, a stronger-working
church and a community-conscious liberation-conscious church."
