News Release
May 2000
Alumni
returning to Moravian College for reunion and celebration will enjoy
an exciting schedule of events and entertainment planned for Friday,
May 19 and Saturday, May 20.
On Friday, May 19, participants will tee off at the Moravian
College Golf Classic at the Bethlehem Municipal Golf Course. The Classic
will be followed by a reception and clambake. Tours of the Main Street
Campus will provide the opportunity for nostalgic memories and updates
on renovations and expansions. A Welcome Back festive barbecue dinner
will be served under tent at the Church Street Campus, and later a tour
will be conducted through the Church Street campus.
Also planned for Friday is the traditional Founders Day
Moravian Lovefeast to take place in Peter Hall at the Church Street
Campus beginning at 11:00 a.m. Rosalind Remer, associate professor of
history, will present, "My Dearest and Only Treasure: A Romance
from the Early Days of the Ladies’ Seminary at Bethlehem."
Remer’s interest in the topic started with an antique gold pocket
watch. Hidden inside the watch, which had recently been given to the
Moravian Historical Society by its English owners, were two unique,
hand-drawn scenes of early Bethlehem. Remer decided to investigate the
watch’s history to uncover the mystery of how and why the tiny
pictures of the Moravian Ladies Seminary and the Moravian Church came
to be tucked inside the watch and how the watch then made its way to
England. What Professor Remer discovered is the moving story of the
watch owner and his wife, who, as a young girl, attended the Ladies
Seminary from 1809 to 1811. Her sleuthing also plunged her into the
fascinating history of an extraordinary Philadelphia family, who left
behind some 18,000 family records, including diaries, letters, travel
accounts, and wills.
Saturday's continental breakfast buffet is followed by
a full day's activities, including the 50+ Club program, a campus tour,
the Alumni Association Annual Meeting, and the Young Alumni Committee
meetings.
The day's activities include a reunion parade of classes
led by three Bethlehem Middle School bands, Nitchmann, Northeast, and
Broughal. antique and classic cars, over a dozen greyhounds, a firetruck,
and the reunion classes.
In recognition of his service to the Moravian College,
the Alumni Association will honor Gus Rampone with its 2000 Medallion
of Merit following the Reunion Luncheon on May 20.
Rampone has been a member of the Alumni Board since 1996,
acting as the Alumni Weekend Chair. Under his guidance, Alumni Weekend
activities have grown steadily, bringing more than 400 people back to
campus each spring.
Even off campus, Rampone’s enthusiasm for Moravian
is contagious. Both as coach and assistant principal of Newton High
School, he sent many students to Moravian College and he continues to
bring students to campus for admission tours.
Rampone is also a member of the executive committee of
the Blue and Grey Club. The Athletics Department recognized Gus with
the Harvey Gillespie Memorial Award in 1995, and with the Robert Martin
Herbstman Award in 1998.
Among his numerous undertakings at Moravian, Rampone has
chaired successful 35th and 40th reunions for his class, and served
as a class agent since the inception of the reunion. He is a regular
at Moravian sporting events, Homecoming, the Comenius Dinner, and Alumni
Weekend; and his commitment to the students and alumni of Moravian College
is exceptional.
Moravian College is a private, coeducational, selective
liberal arts college located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Tracing its
founding to 1742, it is recognized as America's sixth-oldest college.
