(Bethlehem, PA) -- The Balmoral School of Piping and Drumming
will be sponsoring its annual Instructor’s concert on Thursday,
August 3, at Moravian College. Like the legendary Brigadoon emerging
from the mists, the Balmoral School will feature some of the world's
top Scottish pipers and drummers to teach and perform during a three-week
educational session ending on August 4.
The Thursday, August 3 concert will begin at 8 p.m. and
take place at Moravian Colleges’ Foy Concert Hall. The event will
include a performance by the Balmoral skilled student pipe and drum
band, as well as solo and ensemble performances by the instructors.
Over 110 students from the U.S., Canada and Scotland have enrolled to
study with Norman Gillies of Ullapool, Scotland; Joyce McIntosh of Pittsburgh,
PA; Scot Walker of Emmaus, PA; George Balderose of Pittsburgh, PA; Maureen
Connor of Schenectady, NY; and champion Scottish snare drummer Gordon
Bell of Parlin, NJ.
Joyce McIntosh, is an award winning Open competitive piper,
as well as a member of the EUSPBA Judges’ Panel. In addition,
she is a 1999 Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship Awardee for
Folk and Traditional Performing Arts in Highland and Scottish Dancing.
Norman Gillies, is a winner of the Uist & Barra, The Scottish Pipers
Association, The Edinburgh Police, & The British Legion competitions.
Scot Walker was rated #1 Overall Solo Piping Competitor 7 out of 8 years
by the Eastern U.S. Pipe Band Association. George Balderose is an award
winning piper, smallpipe player and instructor who has performed with
the Pittsburgh Symphony and at the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art, in
NYC. Maureen Connor is a Open Class competitive piper this year and
in previous years won many prizes as an amateur player. Gordon Bell
has won every major Scottish solo snare drumming trophy in the USA.
