News Release
August 2000
Enrollment records were shattered at Moravian College
this year as 388 freshmen have enrolled. By far the largest class ever
to enroll, the class of 2004 was selected from a record applicant pool
and is 22% larger than last year’s freshman class. The freshmen
joined 100 new transfer students and 900 returning students, pushing
overall enrollments to record levels.
"We are obviously delighted in the results of our
admission program," said Bernard J. Story, Vice President for Enrollment.
"Interest in Moravian among prospective students is at an all time
high and we are all quite proud of the incoming class of 2004."
Applications for admission increased by 15% over last
year. "We received five applications for each available seat in
the freshman class. The increase allowed us to be very selective when
reviewing the credentials of applicants," Story said.
The Class of 2004 included 242 women and 146 men. "We
are part of a national trend of a change in the gender balance among
college bound students. Each year fewer men are attending college nationally.
We’re looking closely at our numbers, but we expect that trend
to continue for some time."
Moravian College is a private, coeducational, selective
liberal arts college located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Tracing its
founding to 1742, it is recognized as America's sixth-oldest college.
