News Release
September 2000
Parents, siblings, other family members, and friends of
Moravian College students will get a chance to experience campus life
Saturday, September 16, during the college’s annual Family Day,
a fall celebration at Moravian.
The day’s events begin with a morning "coffee
session" where students and their families can chat with college
administrators. Moravian College student life administrators and members
of the Parents’ Council will be on hand.
Following the session and a welcome by Moravian College
president, Dr. Ervin J. Rokke, Family Day participants will attend one
of several presentations on campus-related topics, including "Academic
Opportunities Beyond the Classroom," "From a Distance: How
to Support Your Student's Life and Career Planning" and "Back
to the Future: A Look Inside the Classroom." Prior to lunch, there
will be a reception with faculty and administration.
A festive lunch will be held in Johnston Hall featuring
a Mexican Fiesta and the sounds of a mariachi band. After lunch, students
and families are invited to take in the action as Moravian’s football
team takes Albright College at 1:00 p.m. The women’s tennis team
hosts Franklin & Marshall and the field hockey team takes on Messiah
College at noon, the women’s soccer team battles Haverford College
at 3:30 p.m., and the Volleyball team plays Muhlenberg at 6:00 p.m.
For those who prefer culture over sports, the Mexican
Independence Day Festival will be held in Foy Concert Hall, Church Street
Campus from noon to 4:00 p.m. The festival is sponsored by the Mexican
Cultural Center of Philadelphia and the Moravian College Music Institute.
The fourth annual Mexican Independence Day Festival at Moravian will
feature a variety of performances showcasing regional Mexican dances
and folk songs and will include the official ceremony of El Grito de
Delores or "Cry for Independence."
The day’s activities conclude with a Mass in Borhek
Chapel and a Family Night dinner in the HUB Pavilion featuring a concert
performance by Dave Binder, a storyteller, comedian, and songwriter.
Binder has become a "tradition" on many college campuses throughout
the country. Named Entertainer of the Year on the college circuit for
ten years running, he has delighted his audiences with a repertoire
showcasing the best of James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel, favorite tv
theme songs and much more.—you won’t want to miss this highly
entertaining personality.
