News Release
March 2001
(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) -- Moravian College will host
the premier of the Spanish language version of Gloria Rolando’s
latest film, Raices de Mi Corazon (Roots of My Heart), on Monday, March
19, at 7:30 p.m., in Prosser Auditorium. Rolando will give a lecture
prior to the premier to discuss the story behind the film. Admission
is free and open to the public.
Gloria Rolando’s career spans twenty years at the
Cuban national film institute (ICAIC).
She now also heads an independent filmmaking group, Imagenes
del Caribe, based in Havana, Cuba. Raices de Mi Corazon (Roots of My
Heart) is a significant film that deals with the 1912 massacre of over
six thousand members of the Independents of Color in Cuba, the first
black political party in the hemisphere outside of Haiti. This independently
produced feature film follows a young woman as she finds out about her
family’s roots, which includes disturbing revelations around the
1912 Genocide (El Doce).
Last year Rolando finished another documentary, El Alacran
(the Scorpion), concerning the comparsas, the music and dance style
of Congo origin, popular in the Cuban carnivals. She is currently filming
a documentary on black organizations in Cuba with roots in the 19th
century: Historias de Mis Abuelos. In the past few years, she has directed
five films that focus on the African cultures in Cuba.
Prosser Auditorium is located in the Haupert Union Building
at Monocacy and Locust streets in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. For information
