News Release
July 2001
(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)--Moravian College’s music
department recently received full re-accreditation from the National
Association of Schools of Music (NASM) for each of its programs. The
re-accreditation became effective as of June 6, 2001. The study began
during the 1999-2000 academic year and the request was granted in May
200. It will remain in affect until the 2009-2010 school year, which
is the longest an institution can stay accredited before reapplying.
Moravian College first received accreditation in music
in 1995. It is the only institution in the Lehigh Valley to be accredited
in music and one of 29 in the state. A total of 584 schools nationwide
have earned accreditation since the program started in 1924.
Carol Traupman-Carr, associate dean for academic affairs,
and head of the music department, is optimistic the re-accreditation
will further boost enrollment.
"We know that’s what students look for,"
said Traupman-Carr. "Many schools don’t get accredited because
they don’t want to teach liberal arts in their music programs."
Moravian’s music programs generally consist of three-quarters
music classes and one-quarter liberal arts classes.
In order to gain this status, the department had to devise
a 170-page self-evaluation. NASM took a month to review the evaluation
and then sent two music education experts at the college level to sit
in on classes and practice sessions. While at Moravian they also interviewed
students and faculty as part of their report.
The following majors were re-accredited:
Bachelor of Arts in Music
Bachelor of Music in Music Ed
Bachelor of Music in Composition
Bachelor of Music in Performance
Music Institute
A new program, Bachelor of Music in Sacred Music, will
be accredited as soon as it graduates three students. There is currently
one student involved in it. The program was designed to prepare students
for careers as musicians in any religion and church.
Moravian College is a private, coeducational, selective
liberal arts college located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Tracing its
founding to 1742, it is recognized as America's sixth-oldest college.
