(Bethlehem,
Pennsylvania)- The Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission will sponsor a display
of local artist Corinne Lalin's recent paintings in Bethlehem's Town
Hall Gallery (Rotunda) from October 7 to 30. Lalin is an adjunct professor
of fine arts at Moravian College. The exhibit contains forty oil on
canvas/board paintings that depict a heightened use of light and color
in landscape, still life, and floral paintings. The Gallery at Town
Hall is open to the public, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, October 7, from 2:00
to 4:00 p.m. in the Gallery at Town Hall.
Lalin exhibits widely throughout the eastern United States.
Her work was recently featured in "Shown in Philadelphia, Not Yet
Known in New York", Krasdale Gallery, New York, juried by Burton
Wasserman and reviewed in the New York Times. She also participated
in "Art Makes a Difference" at The Center for Maine Contemporary
Art, Maine Coast Artists, Rockport, Maine. Her work has also been featured
in a two-person exhibition at Haupert Union Building, Moravian College.
She has also had a solo exhibition at Artscape, Inc., Philadelphia,
and was featured artist in a three-person exhibition at NTWH Gallery
in Belfast, Maine.
Lalin has participated in group shows including the Philadelphia
Volunteer Lawyer for the Arts "Art for Artists' Sake" Benefit
Exhibition, Thomas Jefferson University Alumni Hall (jurors, Richard
Rosenfeld, Rick Snyderman, Mark Raab); an invitational at Prince Street
Gallery, New York; Allentown Art Museum and Tomkins Art Center, Allentown,
Pennsylvania; "Have a Heart for Renzo" Auction/Exhibition,
Zoellner Art Center, Lehigh University, Payne Gallery, Moravian College,
and Gallery at Northampton, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; the Institute of
Contemporary Art, Meyerson Gallery, Paley Design Center, and Arthur
Ross Gallery, Philadelphia; Bargeron Gallery, Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania;
and Hicks Art Center, Newtown, Pennsylvania. Among the many collectors
of her work are Charles Cawley, C.E.O. of MBNA Corporation, and Parallax
Productions, Inc.
Lalin has been an adjunct professor of intermediate and advanced painting,
drawing, and illustration at Moravian College since 1996. Prior to coming
to Moravian, she was an instructor at Philadelphia University, Temple
University, and Bucks County Community College. She received the M.F.A.
and B.F.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied with
Neil Welliver. She also received a B.A. from Smith College.
Lalin is co-founder of Brushworks, Inc., New Hope, Pennsylvania,
a design firm specializing in murals and decorative paintings. Major
commissions by Brushworks include the Grand Carousel, Lahaska; Roman-Style
Poolhouse, New Hope; and Penn's View Inn, Philadelphia. Brushworks has
been featured in Philadelphia Magazine, Art Matters, Philadelphia Inquirer
Magazine, and Traditional Building. A mural was also commissioned for
the Haupert Union Building, Moravian College, as a class gift.
About her painting, Lalin writes:
"My recent paintings integrate my training as an
ala prima landscape painter into the world of still life, flowers, gardens,
and architectural spaces. Last summer I spent six weeks painting on
the coast of Maine. After a traumatic, but thankfully not tragic, winter,
my soul was rekindled by the powerful Maine sunlight. In the wake of
our national tragedy, I look back on these paintings and feel the healing
that I experienced through the meditative act of painting.
"Through fully immersing myself in the painting process,
I felt internal peace and healing. I believe that art is a way of knowing
the world. The creative act and homage to light and beauty takes on
a new meaning after September 11. I celebrate the reverence for life
and peace in these paintings."
