September 2001
(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) The Moravian College Music Department
and Jacobs Music will host a fascinating lecture by Ray Rotunda on the
construction of a Steinway piano on Wednesday, September 26, 2001, at
7 - 9 p.m. in Moravian College's Peter Hall. The evening offers an extraordinary
opportunity to view the "National On Tour" Construction Display
that affords the chance to see a Steinway designed performing grand
piano disassembled and available for inspection.
The event will include a performance by Jazz virtuoso
Eric Doney, the featured guest artist for the evening. Doney's classical
career began with his public performance in first grade, and continued
on after college playing for local jazz legends and a tour with vocalist
Jon Hendricks, with whom he recorded the Grammy-nominated album, Love.
While living in Paris, Doney toured with vocalist Kim Parker. Returning
to the States he was a member of the David Johansen band, and opened
for such groups as The Who, Blondie, Duran Duran, the Clash, and R.E.O.
Speedwagon. During his career he conducted for Connie Stevens; played
for Les Brown's Band of Renown; was a pianist for Bob Hope's television
shows; performed at the opening ceremony of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics;
and for three years was musical director for Englebert Humperdink, touring
more than 40 countries. In 1993 he formed PACIFIC STREET RECORDS and
has produced 18 releases to date, recording such jazz greats as Phil
Woods, Bob Dorough, John Coates, Jr. and Scott Jarett. Among his awards
Doney has been honored as on of the five finalists by Jazziz magazine
in their Keyboards on Fire talent search.
